Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Lesbos , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Lesbos (see lesbian adj.) + -ic suffix, in sense 1 after Aeolic adj., Doric adj., etc. Compare earlier lesbian adj.With 1 compare post-classical Latin Lesbicus (9th cent.; rare). With sense 2 compare earlier Sapphic adj. 2.
Now somewhat rare.
1. With capital initial. Of, belonging, or relating to the Aegean island of Lesbos, especially as the home of the ancient Greek poet Sappho (cf. Sapphic adj. 1).
