Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Hebrew. Etymons: Latin Mara, Hebrew mārāh.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin Mara (Vulgate) and its etymon (ii) Hebrew mārāh, feminine of mar bitter, used as a place name in Exodus 15:23 and as a personal name in Ruth 1:20 (compare quots. OE, a13821). Compare maror n. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mā·ră) /ˈmɑːrə/.
