β. Scottish (chiefly Banffshire) 1800s– meislen, 1800s– meisslen, 1800s– meyseln.

Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch muizelen.
Etymology: Partly < Dutch regional muizelen, a frequentative derived < Dutch muizen to nibble (see mouse v.; compare early modern Dutch meuselen to eat up silently, lick up); and partly < Dutch regional muizelen , a frequentative derived < Dutch regional muizen to break into small pieces, mash (a variant of moezen to mash < moes mash, pulp, stewed vegetables or fruit: see moose n.1).The β. forms perhaps represent back-formations < meislan , a verbal noun (see -ing suffix1) with sense ‘a very small piece’ (recorded in W. Gregor Dial. Banffshire (1866) 113; compare quot. 1866 at sense 1).
Scottish and English regional (northern). Now rare.
