Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin longanon, longaon, longāvōn-, longāvō.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin longanon, longao (4th cent.), longaon (14th cent.) rectum, alterations of classical Latin longāvōn-, longāvō kind of sausage (Varro), of unknown origin. The ancient grammarian Varro derives the word from longus long adj.1; with the suffix compare classical Latin apexabō, also denoting a kind of sausage (Varro). Compare Anglo-Norman and Middle French longaon (13th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman, 14th cent. in continental French), Spanish †longaon (15th cent.), Italian longaone (first half of the 14th cent. as †longon).In form longanum with alteration after Latin neuter nouns in -um . In β. forms with alteration of the ending after -ation suffix. It is unclear whether the forms in the following quotation are Latin or English:1706 Phillips's New World of Words (new ed.) Longano, Longanon, or Longabo, the Straight Gut, in the Fundament.The post-classical Latin form longano is attested from the 4th cent.; the form longabo is attested in 16th-cent. editions of Varro.
