Chiefly North American.
A low-growing shrubby plant of far north temperate regions, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, with varieties native to northern Eurasia and North America. Also: the fruit of this plant, a tart red berry similar to a cranberry, typically eaten cooked in pies or used for making jams, jellies, and sauces.The North American lingonberry (also called mountain cranberry) has smaller leaves than the Eurasian plant, and is sometimes considered to be a distinct subspecies or classified as a separate species, Vaccinium minus. Other names for the Eurasian lingonberry include cowberry and red whortleberry.
