Origin: Perhaps formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: an element of unknown origin, thorn n.
Etymology: < a first element of unknown origin + thorn n.The first element is unlikely to be either ling n.1 or ling n.2 on semantic grounds.
English regional (northern). Now rare.
Either of two large European starfishes of the genus Luidia, which have five or seven spiny arms that readily detach or fragment.

1841 E. Forbes Hist. Brit. Starfishes 139 The five-armed form is there [i.e. at Scarborough] called Lingthorn by the fishermen, and is taken in deep water: but is very rare.
1869 5th Eng. Reading Bk. 113 The Lingthorn..has the power of breaking itself into pieces when it is in a passion.
1913 Cassell's Nat. Hist. 64 The Lingthorn has long, flat, and rather slender rays.
