2. Mathematics. Division in which simple division by the divider is applied to successive groups of digits of the dividend, allowing large, multi-digit numbers to be divided by hand. In early use spec.: such division used when the divisor is greater than twelve.The divisor is divided into the first digits of the dividend that give a quotient between 1 and 9; the result is the first digit of the quotient. The product of this digit and the divisor is then subtracted from the corresponding portion of the dividend, and the next digit of the dividend is brought down alongside the result. The divisor is then divided into this to obtain the next digit of the quotient, and so on.
