Etymology: < Middle French, French -pole (16th cent. in pharmacopole pharmacopole n.) and its etymon classical Latin -pōla < ancient Greek -πώλης a seller, dealer (in e.g. ϕαρμακοπώλης pharmacopole n.) < πωλεῖν to sell < the same Indo-European base as fele adj.1Recorded chiefly in Latin loans, earliest in pharmacopole n. (via French), subsequently e.g. in bibliopole n. An isolated formation within English, monopole n.2, is found in the mid 17th cent. Combining with first elements ultimately of Greek origin.
