Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin podium.
Etymology: < classical Latin podium (see podium n.). Compare -pode comb. form, -pod comb. form and also podium n. II.In Botany, polypodium n., the earliest example in English, is ultimately from ancient Greek; the majority of examples were formed in the 19th cent. In Zoology, the earliest examples include metapodium n. and mesopodium n.
