单词 -plex
释义

-plexsuffix1

Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element, e.g. eight-plex Brit. /ˈeɪtplɛks/, U.S. /ˈeɪtˌplɛks/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin -plex.
Etymology: < classical Latin -plex, suffix (in e.g. simplex simplex adj., duplex duplex adj.) < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek πλέκειν to plait (see fold v.1).Classical Latin -plex is attached chiefly to cardinal numbers (and adjectives meaning ‘many’) to form adjectives, as simplex , duplex , triplex , multiplex , etc. First recorded in English adjectives derived from these Latin adjectives, from the late 16th cent. The use of duplex and related words in Telegraphy led to the occasional development of further terms on Latin analogies, as contraplex adj., diplex adj., in the late 19th cent. From the early 20th cent. the sequence duplex , triplex , etc., was used for nouns designating ‘a building or dwelling divided into two (three, etc.) floors, residences, or the like’ (compare also quadplex n.), and gave rise to analogous formations on English numerals, examples of which are given here.
A terminal element equivalent to English -fold suffix, forming nouns and adjectives; spec. (originally U.S.) with a numeral as first element, (a) designating a building divided into a number of separate units; (b) designating a multiplex cinema consisting of a given number of screens.
