Etymology: < Middle French, French augites precious stone mentioned by Pliny (1566 in the passage translated in quot. 1601; rare before 1751) < classical Latin augītis (in post-classical Latin also augites , e.g. in manuscripts of Pliny), probably an inferior variety of turquoise (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek αὐγῖτις (feminine noun), only attested as a plant name, use as noun of αὐγίτης (adjective), designating a precious stone < ancient Greek αὐγή lustre, of unknown origin + -ίτης -ite suffix1. Obsolete. society > occupation and work > materials > raw material > gem or precious stone > turquoise > [noun] > varieties of 1601 P. Holland tr. Pliny II. xxxvii. x. 624 As for the Augites [Fr.
