Any of various musical instruments originating in sub-Saharan Africa, consisting of a board, box, or bowl held in the hands, with a series of metal or bamboo tongues attached to it, which are plucked by the thumbs and forefingers.Typically the longest tongue is in the centre with successively shorter ones arranged alternately on either side.Instruments of this kind are known by a variety of names in different parts of Africa: see, e.g., mbira n., marimba n. 2, kalimba n.; likembe is used in areas of Central, East, and Southern Africa, esp. the Democratic Republic of Congo.
