Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Frisian todrīva , Old High German zitrīban , zirtrīban (Middle High German zertrīben , German †zertreiben ), both in sense ‘to drive apart, disperse’ < the Germanic base of to- prefix2 + the Germanic base of drive v. Compare to-dreve v.In Old English a strong verb of Class I; strong forms survive in Middle English.
