Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch kaatsspel.
Etymology: < Dutch †kaatsspel, †caetspel, the name of the game (1514), the court in which it is played (1567) < kaatsen to play this game (see cache n.1) + speel sport, game (see spile n.1). Compare earlier cache n.1In γ. forms with remodelling of the second element after ball n.1 The first element was perhaps also sometimes associated with catch n.2; however, there is no overlap in sense with later catchball n.
