Etymology: Probably < Jack n.2 (compare Jack n.2 2a) + -leg (in blackleg n.; compare blackleg n. 2).A suggested connection with jockteleg n. seems unlikely.
U.S. regional (chiefly southern and south Midland) and colloquial.

1. Of a lawyer, preacher, or other professional: lacking skills or training, incompetent; unscrupulous, dishonest. Also of a preacher (chiefly in African-American usage): itinerant. Cf. jack-legged adj. 1.
