Etymology: < scientific Latin Adelaster, genus name (J. Lindley 1861, in Proc. Royal Hort. Soc. 1 568, in a report of a meeting held on 23 Apr. 1861 but published some time after 12 Nov. of that year; the name was earlier published in print by J. G. Veitch 1861, in Gardener's Chron. 1 June 499/1) < ancient Greek ἄδηλος not evident, unseen (see adelo- comb. form) + ἀστέρ- , ἀστήρ star (see aster n.).

Botany. Now historical and rare.

Each of several plants formerly placed in a small genus Adelaster but now placed in the genus Fittonia (family Acanthaceae), comprising small South American plants sold elsewhere as indoor pot plants for their foliage. Also (in form Adelaster): the former genus itself.Although the genus Adelaster was not formally abolished until 1980 (quot. 1980) the name, introduced in 1861, had little currency after 1870, partly because it was long regarded (incorrectly) as invalidly published and the name Fittonia was preferred.
