Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a Swedish lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek ἀδελϕός , -lite comb. form¹.

Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀδελϕός brother (see adelphous adj.) + -lite comb. form¹, after Swedish adelfolit, adelpholit (N. Nordenskiöld in A. E. Nordenskiöld Beskrifning öfver de i Finland funna mineralier (1855) 38 and 87) or German Adelpholith (N. Nordenskiöld 1858, in Neues Jahrb. f. Mineralogie 313); so called with reference to a perceived close similarity of the mineral to samarskite.In A. H. Chester Dict. Names Minerals (1896) 3 and later works the name is attributed to N. Nordenskiöld Verzeichniss der in Finland gefundenen Mineralien (1852) 87.

Mineralogy. Now disused.
