Etymology: Origin unknown. Compare Anglo-Norman Escopart, the name of this giant in the earliest extant version of the story of Sir Bevis of Southampton (beginning of the 13th cent.). Perhaps compare also Anglo-Norman Ascoparcz (plural) as the name of a people native to Arabia (14th cent. in Jean de Mandeville Le livre des merveilles du monde).The legend of Sir Bevis of Southampton is generally thought to be of English origin.
