Etymology: < Japanese hanchō group leader, squad leader (1917 or earlier; perhaps (with traditional pronunciation of the kanji) < Chinese bānzhǎng group leader (18th cent. or earlier); < bān group + zhǎng leader).
colloquial.
1. Originally and chiefly U.S. Originally: the leader of a small group or squad. Hence: any person in charge; a manager, a boss.Originally used among American prisoners of war in Japan during the Pacific phase (1941–5) of the Second World War.
