释义

-aceoussuffix

Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin -āceus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin -āceus, suffix forming adjectives, with the sense ‘of the nature of’ ( < -āc- + -eus : see -eous suffix) + -ous suffix. Compare scientific Latin -aceae (late 18th cent. or earlier in family names of plants, as Ranunculaceae (see ranunculaceous adj.), Rosaceae (see rosaceous adj.), etc.). Compare also French -acé (formations in which are found from the 16th cent., apparently earliest in cétacé cetacean adj.).Attested earliest at the beginning of the 17th cent. in adaptations of classical Latin adjectives in -āceus , e.g. arenaceous adj., herbaceous adj., porraceous adj.; subsequently also in adaptations of post-classical Latin and scientific Latin taxonomic names ending in -acea (e.g. cetaceous adj., crustaceous adj.) and -aceae (for the names of plants and fungi, the regular use in botanical taxonomy of the suffix -aceae having been introduced by J. Lindley in 1836 in his Nat. Syst. Bot. (ed. 2)), e.g. mucoraceous adj., musaceous adj.
