Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin -acea , -an suffix; Latin -aceae , -an suffix.
Etymology: Partly (in zoological use) < post-classical Latin and scientific Latin -acea -acea suffix + -an suffix, and partly (in botanical use) < post-classical Latin and scientific Latin -aceae, suffix forming family names (use as noun of feminine plural of classical Latin -āceus -aceous suffix) + -an suffix. Compare -aceous suffix and the foreign-language suffixes cited at that entry.Attested in scientific taxonomical terms from at least the first half of the 19th cent. Combining with first elements ultimately of Latin and Greek origin. The ending -acean is earlier found in a number of adjectives formed with -an suffix on Latin adjectives in -aceus (see -aceous suffix), e.g. relollacean adj., lappacean adj., sebacean adj., violacean adj.
