Etymology: < post-classical Latin and scientific Latin -acea (formations in which are found from at least the 17th cent., e.g. crustacea Crustacea n.), use as noun of neuter plural of classical Latin -āceus (see -aceous suffix); compare -a -a suffix². The neuter plural ending is used because the names of groups of animals are short for a noun phrase with animalia , plural of animal animal n., as its head. Compare French -acées , plural (formations in which are found from at least the early 18th cent., e.g. in rubiacées : see rubiaceous adj.).
