单词 -acal
释义

-acalsuffix

Primary stress is attracted to the syllable immediately preceding this suffix and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. prosodiacal adj.
Forms: 1500s–1700s -acall, 1500s– -acal.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: -ac suffix, -al suffix1.
Etymology: < -ac suffix + -al suffix1, probably on the model of -ical suffix beside -ic suffix.Found from the 16th cent. onwards, sometimes in formations on nouns in -ac suffix, but from an early date also directly as an adjective-forming suffix on other stems. Compare e.g. harmoniacal adj., elegiacal adj., Syriacal adj., simoniacal adj., Egyptiacal adj., arteriacal adj., zodiacal adj. (Late Middle English cardyacle probably shows a formation in -le suffix rather than an early example of cardiacal adj.)
Forming adjectives, sometimes corresponding to nouns in -ac suffix. N.E.D. (1884) suggested that such adjectives are distinguished semantically from adjectives in -ac suffix, these designating a primary connection, ‘of, of the nature of’, while those in -acal suffix designate a secondary connection, e.g. ‘connected with, associated with’, but this seems not to be true in most instances.
