1839 Farmer's Mag. Sept. 226/1 Havelling machine for separating the havel from barley, without injury to the grain.
1858 Jrnl. Bath & West of Eng. Soc. Agric. 6 118 All the chaff being blown away, the corn passes through the avelling-machine, and when barley is being cleaned it is at this time the process of avelling is performed.
1895 Eng. Mechanic & World of Sci. 1 Feb. 556/2 An awner, hummeler, or aveling machine consists, as a rule, of a cylinder, in which revolving beaters knock the awns off the barley.
1986 J. Bell & M. Watson Irish Farming: Implem. & Techniques, 1750–1900 x. 218 Removing the awns [from barley] could require a separate operation, which became known as hummelling, awning, or avelling.
