Etymology: < pheno- comb. form + -gam comb. form, after scientific Latin phaenogama (short for phaenogama vegetabilia ; C. L. Willdenow, in J. F. Rebentisch Prodromus floræ Neomarchicæ (1804) p. v.), phaenogamae (short for phaenogamae plantae ), both plural nouns; compare scientific Latin phaenogamus , adjective (1805 or earlier). Compare German Phänogamen , plural noun (C. A. Rudolphi Anatomie der Pflanzen (1807) 17). Compare earlier phaenogamian adj., phaenogamic adj., phaenogamous adj.
Botany. Now rare or historical.
A phanerogam; a spermatophyte.
