Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: pheno- comb. form, -carpous comb. form.
Etymology: < pheno- comb. form + -carpous comb. form, after scientific Latin phaenocarpus (1856 or earlier). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (fīnokā·ɹpəs) /fiːnəʊˈkɑːpəs/.
Botany. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Of a plant: bearing a fruit that is free of the surrounding parts.

1858 R. G. Mayne Expos. Lexicon Med. Sci. (1860) 926/1 Phænocarpus, applied to fruits which are very apparent, because they have no adherence to the neighbouring parts: phenocarpous.
1866 J. Lindley & T. Moore Treasury Bot. II. 871/2 Phænocarpous, bearing a fruit which has no adhesion with surrounding parts.
