ghost marriage n. a legal marriage in which one or both of the couple are deceased.In China, ghost marriages most often occur to continue the lineage of a deceased person. The deceased person, who can be either member of the couple, is typically represented by a bamboo effigy, which is burnt following the wedding ceremony.Among the Atuot, Dinka, and Nuer people of South Sudan, ghost marriages are between a woman and a deceased man, who is typically represented by his brother; any resulting children are considered to be those of the deceased (cf. ghost family n.).
