Etymology: < classical Latin pompholyg-, pompholyx zinc oxide (Pliny) and its etymon ancient Greek πομϕολυγ-, πομϕόλυξ bubble, in Hellenistic Greek also blister, zinc oxide < πομϕός pustule ( < the same base as ancient Greek πέμϕιξ breath, blast, in Hellenistic Greek also pustule: see pemphix n.) + a second element apparently of expressive origin. Compare Middle French, French †pompholyx zinc oxide (16th cent. in Paré).A connection has been suggested between ancient Greek πέμϕιξ, πομϕός and Lithuanian pampti to swell, pumpulis rounded object, bumbulas bulge, knob; the divergence in the forms may reflect the expressive nature of these words.
