Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French pomperie ; pomp n.1, -ery suffix.
Etymology: < Middle French pomperie pomp, display (a1352) < pompe pomp n.1 + -erie -ery suffix. Compare Middle Dutch pomperie, Dutch (chiefly southern) pomperij. In later use probably independently < pomp n.1 + -ery suffix.In quot. 1939 perhaps a pun on the title of E. Bulwer-Lytton The Last Days of Pompeii (1834).
