Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Pompilus , -id suffix3.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pompilus, genus name ( J. C. Fabricius Supplementum entomologiæ systematicæ (1798) 212; probably transferred use (although the motivation for the transfer is unclear) of classical Latin pompilus (also pompilos ) pilot fish or its etymon Hellenistic Greek πομπίλος < either ancient Greek πομπή pomp n.1 or πομπός escort, guide ( < πέμπειν to send: see pomp n.1) + -λος, suffix forming nouns) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Pompilidae, family name (1840 or earlier). With use as noun compare French pompilidés, plural noun (1907).

Of or relating to the hymenopteran family Pompilidae, that comprises solitary wasps which excavate burrows that are provisioned with paralysed spiders as food for the young.
