Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: gentian n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: < gentian n. + -ic suffix. Compare French acide gentianique (1854 or earlier).
Biochemistry. Now rare.
gentianic acid, any of several compounds originally isolated from gentian root; esp. gentisin and gentisic acid.
