Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: German adj., tinder n.
Etymology: < German adj. + tinder n. In sense 1 after French mèche d'Allemagne (1704 in the passage translated in quot. 1776 at sense 1). With sense 2 compare German Zunderschwamm, lit. ‘tinder sponge, tinder fungus’.
Now historical.
1. A felt-like material prepared from the fruiting bodies of Fomes fomentarius and certain other fungi, used esp. as tinder (usually after having been soaked in saltpetre); = amadou n. Now historical.In quot. 1851: a name used for friction matches (fusees), perhaps with heads of German tinder, as sold on the streets of London; cf. German Congreve n. at German n. and adj. Compounds 1b.
