Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French accabler.
Etymology: < French accabler to overwhelm, crush (a person) (first third of the 14th cent. in Old French or Middle French as acchaabler ; 1329 in sense ‘to knock down, overturn (trees)’; 1423 in sense ‘to knock down and injure (a person)’) < a- a- prefix5 + Old French (Normandy), Middle French cabler (originally of the wind) to knock (a person or thing) down (1251; < Old French caable , variant (with elision of medial -d- ) of cadable catapult (c1100: see cable n.)). In form accabléd after the French past participle accablé.
Obsolete.
