Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: accede v., -ence suffix.
Etymology: < accede v. + -ence suffix. Compare post-classical Latin accedentia approach, advance (c1620 in a British source). Compare earlier acceding n., accession n. N.E.D. (1884) gives a French form accédence as the etymon of the English word. However, the French word is not attested; Middle French accedense ‘event’ (early 15th cent. in an isolated attestation), which may have been the source of N.E.D.'s French form, is a variant of accidence accidence n.1
