Etymology: < geo- comb. form + politics n., after Swedish geopolitik ( R. Kjellén Inledning til Sveriges geografi (1900) 17). Compare German Geopolitik (1903 (in a review of Kjellén) or earlier).
Politics (esp. relations between states) as influenced by geographical factors; spec. a theory of politics associated with the German political scientist and geographer Karl Haushofer (1869–1946) which regarded the state as an organism with powers independent of and superior to those of its constituent groups or individuals. Also: the study of this.
