A disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of localized oedematous swelling in the deeper layers of the skin and, often, in the submucosal tissue of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts.Angioedema results from increased vascular permeability associated with the release of bradykinin and other vasoactive substances. It can occur as an allergic response, a complication of other diseases and of ACE inhibitor treatment, and in a hereditary form associated with deficiency of the inhibitor of the first component of complement.Earlier names for this disorder were angioneurotic oedema, Quincke's oedema, Quincke's disease.
