Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin ambe; Greek ἄμβη.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin ambe device for reducing dislocations (1532 or earlier; also ambi (1582 or earlier)), and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek (Ionic) ἄμβη raised edge or protuberance, device for reducing dislocations (Hippocrates), corresponding to ancient Greek (Attic) ἄμβων projecting lip or edge (see ambon n.).In sense 1 originally via Dutch ambi (1598 in the passage translated in quot. 1598 at sense 1). Compare Middle French, French †ambi (second half of the 16th cent. in Paré).
1. Surgery. A device or apparatus used to reduce dislocations of the shoulder. Now historical.
