Etymology: Probably partly < Middle French ambassade ambassade n. + -y suffix3, and partly (in later use) an alteration of ambassade n. after ambassy n., or embassy n.With sense 2 compare earlier ambassadry n.
Now historical and rare.
1. A group or (occasionally) a person sent on a diplomatic or political mission; a diplomatic deputation.
