Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: ambassade n.
Etymology: Apparently an alteration (with suffix substitution: see -age suffix) of ambassade n. Compare earlier embassage n., embassade n., and later embassy n., ambassy n.This formation is not paralleled in any Romance language. Compare Old French ambasce (see ambassy n.). This word was apparently originally stressed on the second syllable. First-syllable stress is attested from at least the early 17th cent. (compare e.g. quot. 1609 at sense 3).
Now rare.
1. The business or function of an ambassador (in various senses of ambassador n.). Also: a diplomatic or political mission. Cf. embassage n. 2.Formerly also in †in (also of) ambassage: in the role of ambassador; on a diplomatic mission (obsolete).
