A spiny yellow-flowered shrub or small tree, Aeschynomene elaphroxylon (family Leguminosae, subfamily Papilionoideae), which grows in waterside and swampy habitats in tropical Africa and has very light, spongy wood. Also called pith tree, balsa wood tree (with reference to the similarity of the tree's wood to balsa wood). Cf. sola n.
