Etymology: < scientific Latin Globigerina (A. d'Orbigny 1826, in Ann. des sci. nat. 7 277) < globi- , combining form of classical Latin globus globe n. + -ger (see -gerous comb. form) + -īna -ine suffix1. Compare French globigérine (A. d'Orbigny 1826, in Ann. des sci. nat. 7 277). Compare later globigerine adj.
Zoology and Palaeontology.
A genus of chiefly planktonic foraminiferans of the family Globigerinidae, the microscopic spherical shells of which accumulate to form thick deposits that cover large areas of the ocean floor. Also (in form globigerina): a foraminiferan of this genus, or (more widely) the family Globigerinidae or order Globigerinida. Cf. globigerine adj.
