Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Globigerina n., -id suffix3.
Etymology: < Globigerina n. + -id suffix3, probably after scientific Latin Globigerinidae, family name (Schultz, 1877; after Globeriginida, former group name ( W. B. Carpenter Introd. Stud. Foraminifera (1862) ix. 171)). Compare scientific Latin Globigerinida , order name (Calkins, 1909). Compare earlier globigerine adj.

A foraminiferan of the family Globigerinidae or order Globigerinida, which comprises chiefly planktonic forms with spherical shells and includes the genus Globigerina (see Globigerina n.).
