Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: proper name Annam , -itic suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Annam (see Annamese adj.) + -itic suffix, after French annamitique (1674 or earlier as adjective, 1762 or earlier as noun). Compare earlier Annamite n.Compare post-classical Latin annamiticus (1651 in the work cited in quot. 1668), and (with different suffix) German annamitisch (1673 or earlier), both adjectives. Compare also the following apparently isolated earlier example of a similarly-formed adjective Anamitish (apparently < the name of Annam + -itish at -ite suffix1 4b, after post-classical Latin annamiticus):1668 Bp. J. Wilkins Ess. Real Char. 452 Every Syllable (as this of Ko) hath no less than ten several ways of pronunciation..; and it hath more than thirty several significations in the Anamitish Language. [In margin] Lingua Anamitica, cap. 2.
Now somewhat rare.

1. Designating the most widely spoken Mon-Khmer language of what is now Vietnam; of or relating to the Vietnamese language.Quot. 1759 may alternatively be interpreted as showing sense B., but it seems more likely that the use should be viewed as adjectival.
