单词 jetter
释义

jettern.1

Forms:

α. Middle English gettare, Middle English gettere, Middle English gettour, Middle English–1500s getter, 1500s gettar.

β. Middle English iettir, Middle English iettoure, Middle English jectour, Middle English–1600s ietter, 1500s iettar.

Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: jet v.1, -er suffix1.
Etymology: Apparently < jet v.1 + -er suffix1, after classical Latin iactātor jactator n. Compare Anglo-Norman gettour , Anglo-Norman and Middle French geteur , getteur , jetteur (French jetteur ) person who throws something (c1170 in Old French), person who casts metal (1359 or earlier in Anglo-Norman; < geter , getter , jeter , jeter jet v.1 + -eur -er suffix2); the senses of the English noun are not paralleled either in French or in other Romance languages.Perhaps attested earlier as a surname, e.g. William Getour (1296–7; Kent), Gilbert Getour (1301; Yorkshire), John le Gettere (1332; Wiltshire), John Jetour (1359; Kent), etc., although it is unclear whether these should be interpreted as reflecting the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word (the latter probably in sense ‘person who casts metal’.
Obsolete.
A person who behaves ostentatiously; a boasting or swaggering person.
