Etymology: Old English *fnéosan (whence fnéosung ‘sternutatio’ (Wright-Wülcker 162), fnora ‘sternutatio’ ( Corp. Gloss.), ge-fnésan to sneeze (see below), cognate with Dutch fniezen, Old Norse fnýsa (Danish fnyse, Swedish fnysa to snort). The weak-grade of the root *fneus- (? cognate with Greek πνεῖν , root *pneu- to breathe) is represented in Old English fnora sneezing (Corp. Gloss.). Closely parallel in sound and sense, though belonging to a different ablaut series, are Old Norse fnasa (see fnast n.) and fnœ́sa ( < *fnōs-ja) to snort.
Obsolete.
intransitive. To sneeze; also, to puff, snort.
