Etymology: Apparently < French Polymatype the name of a machine for casting multiple types (not dated in dictionaries of French) < poly poly- comb. form + ma- (perhaps in either matrice matrix n. or machine machine n.) + type type n.The machine was invented by Henri Didot (1765–1852) and patented in England by Louis John Pouché in 1823. The word is not found in the latter's patent.

Printing. Now historical and rare.

A system of typecasting by which a large number of types can be produced simultaneously; a machine used for this. Also attributive in polymatype mould.
