Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian fonduta.
Etymology: < Italian (originally regional: Piedmont) fonduta (1854) < French fondue fondue n., with remodelling of the ending after Italian nouns in -uta (which ultimately derive from past participles of verbs).
Cookery.
A dish of melted (typically fontina) cheese usually mixed with milk, cream, butter, and egg yolks, and topped with sliced truffle.
