单词 acquiet
释义

acquietv.

Forms: late Middle English acquiete, 1500s acquieate, 1500s acquiete, 1500s acquyete, 1500s aquyet, 1500s–1600s acquiet; Scottish pre-1700 acqueit, pre-1700 acquet, pre-1700 acquiat, pre-1700 acquiet, pre-1700 acquoyet.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: acquit v.
Etymology: Alteration of acquit v. after quiet adj. With sense 1 compare post-classical Latin acquietare to quitclaim, discharge (land) of claims (frequently from 11th cent. in British sources), to release (a debtor) from obligation (frequently from 12th cent. in British sources; alteration, after classical Latin quiētus quiet adj. and post-classical Latin quietare quiet v., of acquitare acquit v.), and compare also the phrase warantizare, acquietare, et defendere (see warrant v.). Perhaps compare also Anglo-Norman (rare) acquieter , variant of acquiter , acquitter . Sense 2, which is not paralleled at acquit v., either shows a semantic development by association with ac- prefix and quiet v., or may perhaps be after Italian acquietare, acquetare to make (a person) quiet, to calm (a person) (end of the 13th cent. as acquetare ; < ac- (see ad- prefix) + quietare quiet v.); compare earlier acquieting n.With the forms in Older Scots compare forms at quiet adj. The following isolated later instance of the form acquiet appears to be a typographical error for acquaint v.:1918 Roswell (New Mexico) Daily Record 13 Feb. 1/4 Prompted by a desire to furnish the boys..an opportunity to more easily acquiet themselves with the elevating and refining influence of the Christian people of Roswell.
Obsolete.
