Etymology: < classical Latin prūrient-, prūriēns, present participle of prūrīre to itch, to long, to be sexually excited, ultimately < the same Indo-European base as freeze v. Compare Middle French, French †pruriant (1598). Compare pruriently adv.In sense A. 3b after scientific Latin pruriens, used as a specific epithet by Linnaeus ( Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) 1162).
