Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prūnus.
Etymology: < classical Latin prūnus (feminine) plum tree, (in prūnus silvestris ) sloe bush, of unknown origin, probably a loanword, as are Hellenistic Greek προύμνη , Byzantine Greek προῦνον plum tree (see prune n.).
1. Originally: †a plum tree (obsolete). In later use: a plant of the genus Prunus (family Rosaceae), comprising trees and shrubs bearing drupaceous fruits, including the plum, cherry, peach, apricot, sloe, bullace, etc.; (in form Prunus) the genus itself. Now: esp. any of various ornamental cherries planted for their pink or white flowers.Adopted as a genus name by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum (1753) I. 473, after his earlier use in Hortus Cliffortianus (1738) 186.
